PCM is the short form of “Phase Change Material”, also called in day to day language as Eutectic. First, let us understand the PCM in its right perspective. “Phase change Material” – as it sounds, any material which changes its stage with the change of temperature is called PCM. To understand the same in the layman language, water is a good example at room temperature normally in liquid form, but when the temperature drops below 0 degrees centigrade it starts freezing and as we got lower it becomes ice. Likewise, the same water, if heated up above 100 degrees centigrade, starts changing the stage and becomes vapour.
At room temperature i.e. around 27 degrees centigrade, water is a liquid and beyond 100 degrees centigrade it is in vapour form. Now, this physical property is important and used extensively by the refrigeration industry for various applications such as Ice-cream vending. A “Eutectic Freezer” means that a chemical which is not harmful to humans is chosen to freeze at -25 degrees centigrade, in integration with the refrigeration system. The evaporator transfers the cooling to it which is frozen.
Why do we use Eutectic Freezers?
